BENDING METALSBENDING METALSThe technician frequently encounters sheet-metal fabrication requirements that require bending the metal to various shapes. When a metal is bent, it is subjected to changes in its grain structure, causing an increase in hardness. The composition of the metal, its temper, and its thickness determine the minimum radius that may be successfully generated in the part through bending without adversely affecting the material. Table 8-3 shows the recommended radius for different types of aluminum. Note that the smaller the thickness of material, the smaller the recommended bend radius.
