In most cases these oscillators are part of a synthesizer and they are voltage controlled, meaning that the frequency is determined by tuning diodes (varactors). The applied dc voltage varies the frequency. For high-performance circuits, the Colpitts oscillator is most frequently selected [9.38–9.66].The Colpitts oscillator comes in three varieties.
