Hydraulic Capacity and EfficiencyIn column operation, especially when the economic target requires throughput maximization, the behavior of tray efficiency at high hydraulic loads plays an important role in defining the real operating upper limit. The interest of the following theoretical analysis derives from both the demonstration that the real operating limit may occur at lower loads than at full flooding and from the possible controversial detection of such limit from plant experience. The analysis starts from the well-accepted assumption, based on experimental data, regarding the tray efficiency drop when flooding conditions are approached.
