ForewordThe development of efficient and viable large-scale storage of electric energy is one of the oldest and most complex challenges that technologists have been facing since the electrification of energy transmission and distribution starting from the second half of the 19th century. Over the decades, scientists and engineers have been successful in tackling the many issues that they were presented with, and many different technologies have been developed with characteristics that make them fit for use in any kind of electric power plant.Only recently though, the huge penetration of renewable energy conversion plants all around the world as a response to climate change has spurred a novel interest in the deployment of storage plants for a myriad of different intents and applications.
