Observations and Definitions Observation of cylinder pressure versus time measurements in a spark-ignition engine, for successive operating cycles, shows that substantial variations on a cycle-by-cycle basis exist. Since the pressure development is uniquely related to the combustion process, substantial variations in the combustion process on a cycle-by-cycle basis are occurring.
