INTRODUCTION Experimental fluid dynamics (EFD) is a branch of fluid dynamics that complements the analytical and computational fluid dynamics branches. Although the complete equations describing fluid motions were derived several decades ago, today there are only a few solutions of particular problems of those nonlinear, partial differential equations. For turbulent flows, for instance, these solutions are limited to very low Reynolds number flows, which are not applicable to present data technological flows that are mostly in the high Reynolds number regime.
