Alkanes and Cycloalkanes
1011303Alkanes and CycloalkanesAlkanes are one family of organic compounds. These materials contain only carbon and hydrogen atoms. Alkanes are not considered a functional group because they are relatively unreactive and do not undergo many chemical reactions. All bonds between carbon atoms and between carbon and hydrogen atoms in alkanes are single, sigma (σ) bonds. If an element is mentioned in this text, we are referring to an atom of that element. For example, the statement "hydrogen is bonded to carbon" means a hydrogen atom is bonded to a carbon atom.
