1011303Aldehydes and KetonesA large number of natural and manmade compounds are aldehydes (al-dah-hides) and ketones (key-tones). Both families contain the carbonyl (car-bow-kneel), , group. The carbonyl group is of particular interest because it is a polar group and undergoes many types of reactions including nucleophilic addition, substitution, oxidation, and reduction reactions.
