INTRODUCTION In the past 50 years, humans have consumed more resources than in all previous history. How society uses materials is fundamental to many aspects of our economic and environmental future. The rapid rise in material use has led to habitat destruction, biodiversity loss, overly stressed fisheries, and desertification. Using materials from “waste” reduces discards, conserves natural resources and energy, and provides multiple economic benefits.
