Chapter 1 A robot is a programmable multifunctional manipulator designed to move materials, parts, tools, or specialized devices. A computer is the "brain" of the robot. Robots become a reality in 1921—larger ones from the 1950s to the 1970s. A Czech playwright produced a play with a device called a robota. The word was translated into English as robot. The 1950s saw large robots produced and introduced to the public.
